In a significant move for the aviation industry, Uruguay is set to host a groundbreaking commercial facility that utilizes electricity to convert biogas into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This venture, a partnership between the technology firm Syzygy Plasmonics and the global trading giant Trafigura, ensures that the plant’s entire production will be purchased for at least six years once operations commence in 2028.
Located in the Durazno region, this project, known as NovaSAF-1, leverages specialized low-emission technology to create a drop-in fuel alternative that functions with current airplane engines and fueling systems. By securing a total commitment for its output, the project has established the financial stability necessary to pioneer this specific method of reducing the carbon footprint of air travel.
Sustainable aviation fuels have the potential to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from aviation by up to 80% over legacy fuels. Business aviation, an incubator for investment and innovation of all kinds, supports policies and other measures to advance the production, availability and use of the fuels.
